What is it with artists and Kate Moss? Everyone from Lucian Freud and Marc Quinn to Mr. Brainwash has taken a crack at portraying the supermodel, and now the man responsible for the first-ever holographic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (pictured), Chris Levine, has teamed with makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury to tackle the beloved blonde muse.
“Kate has been an ambition of mine for some time as I always felt she was someone who somehow transcended fame and for whatever reason her spirit was resonant in contemporary pop culture,” Levine told the Telegraph. “It’s that spirit I wanted to express, to radiate.”
The resulting large-scale portrait, a “holographic stereogram,” will be unveiled to the public at the Fine Art Society Contemporary on Friday as the centerpiece of Levine’s first solo show, “Light 3.142,” which runs through June 15. It will then go on view June 17 at Selfridges, where it will remain on view for one week.
Not surprisingly, Moss’s popularity with artists made her easy to work with, in spite of Levine’s unusual production process. “She’s a lot of fun and seemingly unaffected by all that surrounds her as an international figure,” Levine told the Telegraph. “Her real beauty is within. It all came about via Charlotte Tilbury. We were looking at doing a project together and the idea of Kate’s portrait seemed to fit the bill and she put it to Kate. It’s uncanny just how the imagery materialised out of our combined vision as if it came from a dream.”
